Elvaen Psychology
The science of the mind of an individual, or group of people.
For those Elvaen -- Spiritual Advisors, Medics, Council, and Sentry.
Opening:
Humans are greatly shaped by the many experiences they have, most with or otherwise concerning other people, before they reach full maturity. If the majority are negative, the outcome is of many and various insecurities. During any point in life, where repeated incidents occur, or even just one of a highly traumatic nature, can cause mental distress.
Self Association:
Most people tend to believe that others are like themselves. This is to say that, a person who has never stolen anything will not think another will perform this act, alternatively a thief will believe that all other people take things and just haven't been called out on the action. Likewise, a spiritual person won't believe that some others haven't any interest in such things.
Having all Requirements Met
In times of plenty we find that there seem to more individuals who may not exactly fit the larger group dynamic, and thusly searched to find a mental or physical problem to label them. Also, in times of plenty, there comes designer labels so that it seems nearly all within any given community can be diagnosed as having a mental or physical problem. More than many times, these are untrue labels and the people in search of a problem are simply unhappy from having things too easy.
Humans have a natural drive, one which they greatly desire, hardship. They have survived as a specie by forcing shelter and food, then clothing and comforts. When all general requirements are met, the Human will continue to find hardships in their lives.
Neurochemical Disorders
Depression and some anxieties are believed to be mediated by problems with brain chemicals; as imbalances can be triggered through neurochemical changes. For example, if the brain tells the body to produce too much of a particular chemical, it can cause severe panic attacks; altenatively, if the body produces too little of a particular chemical, it can result in depression.
Many times people will misinterpret what is to be their level of involvement. There is very little talking can do to actually alleviate neurochemical disorders. Depression is noted as having feelings such as; extreme sadness, difficulties in concentration, feelings of inadequacy, loss of appetite, helplessness, thoughts of death, having an inability to experience pleasure, and suffering from a disturbance in sleep or overall insomnia.
Sleep Dynamics:
Dreams Interpretation... falls into four categories:
- Prophetic;
those dreams, either fully or portions thereof, being revealed as future fact, either immediately or in the far distance... Very rare throughout an individuals lifetime and very difficult to tag as is, and without first holding early record of them for future reference, only to be revealed upon the instance.
- Wish fulfillment;
attempts by the unconscious to resolve a conflict of some sort, whether something recent or something from the recesses of the past... Very common.
- Stresser dreams;
those dreams of anger, misunderstandings, and other conflicts are dreams developed in the mind to relieve built up stress which has no other way to relieve itself... Very common.
--An Example--
To dream of moving in slow motion, or to barely move at all, signifies that the dreamer is presently going through a hard time and experiencing some great stress in the waking life. The dreamer may be feeling powerless concerning a particular situation.
- Ego development;
a general dream, good or bad, that you (the self) is actually taking part in every role within the dream. These dreams reveal thoughts and feelings important to the dreamer... The Majority of Dreams fall into this category.
Other Sleep Distubances:
- Sleep Paralysis;
occurs as a natural part of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Sleep paralysis occurs when the brain awakes from a REM state, but the body paralysis persists. This leaves the person fully conscious, but unable to move. The paralysis can last from several seconds to several minutes after which the individual may experience panic symptoms. In addition, the paralysis state may be accompanied by terrifying hallucinations with an acute sense of danger.
Sleep paralysis is particularly frightening to the individual due to the vividness of such hallucinations. There are many perceptions associated with sleep paralysis, visceral buzzing, loud sounds, adrenal mental state, presences, and the paralysis itself, out of body experiences. Treatment starts with patient education about sleep stages, how to schedule, prepare, and relax the body for sleep, and avoiding chronic sleep deprivation.
- Insomnia;
specifies acute sleeplessness, or the lack of a fully restful sleep over a lengthy period. Insomnia itself is not a disease, but a symptom of disease. Most commonly there are toxic causes, or lack of nutrition, to consider. Anxiety can also be a cause of insomnia. Treatment varies but generally includes habitual practice, warmth of the body and fresh air circulation (but not a draft), exercise early in the day, a light snack eaten before bedtime to draw blood from the brain and more to the stomach, and even some medicinal teas.
- Sleep Walking;
runs frequently in some families. Often more than one child will do this to a greater or lesser extent. It is very extreme in some cases. The morning following this occurance, the sufferer will not know anything about it. As age advances the individual will do less of it less often. Causes vary from fatigue, worry, poor sleep, restlessness, nervousness, and/or a hearty late and generally heavy dinner/snack. Treatment is generally to avoid over-eating, worry, and/or over-working the mind. The evening should be spent quietly, free from anything that may cause worry, fatigue or nervousness.
Psychological Terms:
- Neurosis (Term):
Any of a variety of mental disorders ranging from mental such as having a phobia, to physical conditions such as nervous tics.
- Psychotherapy (Term):
A method of treatment in mental and emotional disorders through the use of techniques designed to encourage insight into persisting problems and bringing changes in behavior to improve one's life, with the goal being relief of symptoms.
Psychological Ailments:
- Parapraxis:
The process whereby a person fails to complete his intention, thought to be the result of a conflict between unconscious and conscious intention. This can occur not only in speech, but also written work, misreading, mishearing, temporary forgetfulness, and the mislaying of common objects. If it occurs often over a period of time, it may indicate a stresser point in one's daily life, ranging from an inner desire to escape a situation or embrace an idea.
- Phobias:
Phobias are the most common form of anxiety disorders. A phobia is an intense, persistent fear of certain situations, activities, things, or people. It is generally accepted that phobias arise from a combination of external events and internal predispositions. Many specific phobias can be traced back to a specific triggering event, usually a traumatic experience at an early age. Social phobias have more complex causes. Heredity, genetics, and brain chemistry combined with life-experiences play a major role in the development of anxiety disorders, phobias and panic attacks.
- Hysteria:
Extreme excitement (or uncontrolled emotional state, from anger to panic) characterized by emotional disturbance, sensory and motor derangement. Hysteria sometimes can undergo a conversion to actual physical symptoms such as amnesia, paralysis, or a sensory deficit, without an organic cause, and can sometimes resemble a neurological disorder such as stroke or epilepsy.
- Obsession:
An involuntary and intrusive preoccupation with something or someone. An irrational motive for performing trivial or repetitive action, and often accompanied with or followed by symptoms of anxiety based on the dread that something bad will happen. The sufferer feels compelled to perform time-consuming behaviors to diminish the anxiety, ranging from hand-washing to a preoccupation with aggressive impulses.
Behavioral therapy, such as having the sufferer gradually learn to tolerate the anxiety associated with not performing the ritual behavior, beginning with something mild, has been demonstrated to be the most effective. However, the individual must be both motivated and consistent. -- Some medications that aid in relieving anxieties, may move recovery along more quickly.
- Repressed Memory;
A significant displacement of memory, usually caused by a traumatic nature, as a way of managing the pain. This mental/emotional suppression can lead into symptoms of neurological disorder. Repressed Memories may sometimes be recovered years or decades after the event, most often spontaneously, triggered by a particular smell, taste, or other identifier related to the lost memory. When dealing with this situation, not one suggestion by the therapist or counselor should be given over. Only listening and opening pathways to the memory are acceptable procedures.
- Hypochondria;
An excessive preoccupation or worry about having a serious illness, even after a medic has found no medical illness. Many people suffer from a general form of this disorder, when focusing on actual problems. However, a Hypochondriac suffers from the power of suggestion. Sufferers are generally aware that depression and anxiety produce their physical symptoms which are mistaken for signs of a serious medical disease. Triggers of this worry can range from having read written works, a recent outbreak of disease, a pandemic prediction, or a serious illness/death of a family member or friend.
- Speech Disorders;
Stammering or Stuttering, can be inherited but is generally worsened through excitement, nervousness, bodily fatigue, need of rest. Treatments include; Reading aloud an hour each day - repeating each word slowly and distinctly, taught early to talk slowly, self control and techniques given to alleviate nervousness, and to keep their minds off of themselves.
- Insanity;
There are many and various causes for insanity, which can include unpleasant influences brought to bear upon the pregnant mother. Most commonly Insanity comes about from; improper nutrition, hard knocks to the head, fright, extreme early punishment, unnatural and excessive use of the sexual organs, sexual diseases, timed education, and not enough fresh air or exercise.
Psychotherapy Techniques:
All theraputic practice must be held in confidence between the therapist and the patient.
- Brief Therapy;
To focus on a specific problem and treatment with direct intervention. This is solution based rather treatment, and less concerned with how a problem arose than those factors preventing change.
- Cognitive Behavioral;
Searching for, by different and varied methods, to identify and transcend the influence of destructive negative emotions and problematic behavior.
- Psychoanalytic;
Encourages the verbalization of all the patient's thoughts, through free associations, fantasies, and dreams, from which the analyst formulates the nature of the unconscious conflicts which are causing the patient's symptoms.
- Reality Therapy;
The individual discovers what is desired and whether what they are currently doing (such as behavior) is actually bringing him/her nearer to, or further away from, that goal. It is critical to get a specific picture of what the ideal solution will look like from the perspective of the person experiencing the problem.
Using a list which includes both what is helping and hindering their progress, the therapist moves the individual away from the problem and into a solution mode. In this way, the focus is off the past and the problem, and instead focused on the behavior the person can create to move into the direction of the solution. During this therapy, it is best to avoid discussion of the past, but to remain aware of the problem.
- Relationship Therapy;
Teaching those co-habitating to listen and respect one another, to facilitate better functioning of the unit.
- Twelve Step Programs;
A set of guiding principles outlining a course of action for recovery from addiction, compulsion, or other behavioral problems.
